Announcing the Preliminary Readers for the Dorset Prize

 

 

We’re pleased to announce the preliminary readers for our 2018 Dorset Prize. These talented writers will help choose which manuscripts should be honored as finalists and forward on to our final judge.


Preliminary Readers for the 2018 Dorset Prize

 

Justin Boening is the author of Not on the Last Day, But on the Very Last, which won the National Poetry Series, and Self-Portrait as Missing Person, which was selected for a PSA Chapbook Fellowship. His recent poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Iowa Review, Poetry International, and Pleiades. Boening is a recipient of the Discovery/Boston Review Poetry Prize and co-edits Horsethief Books.

Lily Brown is the author of Rust or Go Missing (Cleveland State University Poetry Center, 2011) and the chapbook The Haptic Cold (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2013). She has won awards and grants from the Poetry Society of America and the Whiting Foundation. Brown lives and teaches in the Bay Area. She holds an AB in Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies from Harvard College, an MFA in Creative Writing from Saint Mary’s College of California, and a PhD in English and Creative Writing from the University of Georgia.

Kara Candito is the author of Spectator (University of Utah Press, 2014), winner of the Agha Shahid Ali Poetry Prize, and Taste of Cherry (University of Nebraska Press, 2009), winner of the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry. Her work has been published in BlackbirdAGNIThe Kenyon ReviewjubilatDrunken Boat, Forklift Ohio, The RumpusIndiana ReviewBest New Poets 2007, and elsewhere. Candito is the winner of a Pushcart Prize and the recipient of scholarships and awards from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the Council for Wisconsin Writers, the Vermont Studio Center, the MacDowell Colony, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, and the Santa Fe Arts Institute. She is a co-curator of the Monsters of Poetry reading series and a creative writing professor at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville.

Farrah Field is the author of Wolf and Pilot (Four Way Books, 2012), Rising (Four Way Books, 2009) and the chapbook Parents (Immaculate Disciples Press, 2011). Her poems and essays have appeared in many publications including Sixth Finch, Ploughshares, Harp & Altar, Lit, Typo, La Petite Zine, and Drunken Boat.Two of her poems were selected by Kevin Young for The Best American Poetry 2011. Her essays and reviews have appeared in Harp & Altar and Coldfront. She lives in Brooklyn where she co-hosts an event series called Yardmeter Editions. She occasionally blogs at adultish.blogspot.com and is co-owner of Berl’s Brooklyn Poetry Shop.

Marcene Gandolfo’s debut book, Angles of Departure, won Foreword Reviews’ Silver Award for Poetry in 2015. Her poems have been published widely in literary journals, including Poet Lore, Bellingham Review, and December Magazine. She has taught writing and literature at several northern California colleges and universities, and she currently leads poetry workshops for Women’s Wisdom Art, a non-profit organization that provides art instruction to women in the Sacramento community.

Joe Hall is the author of two books of poetry from Black Ocean Press and a member of the publishing collective Hostile Books. His next book, Someone’s Utopia, will be published Spring 2018.

Angela Veronica Wong is the author of elsa (Black Radish 2017). Her chapbooks include Dear Johnny, In Your Last Letter, winner of the Poetry Society of America New York Fellowship. Her fiction has appeared Denver Quarterly, Duende, and Smoking Glue Gun. Her performance work has been featured in independent galleries in Buffalo, Toronto, and New York City.
